"The tragic reality is that very few sustainable systems are designed or applied by those who hold power, and the reason for this is obvious and simple: to let people arrange their own food, energy and shelter is to lose economic and political control over them. We should cease to look to power structures, hierarchical systems, or governments to help us, and devise ways to help ourselves." - Bill Mollison

Another Fine Day

It's cold this morning, but the sun will shine today and the birds outside my window are having a great time in the feeder.

January has passed and a new and shorter month lies ahead. If I really try I can almost conceptualize warmth and green and growth...well almost anyway!

The first photo is so striking. I love the lavender color of the sunbeam and the bit of lavender reflected on the path. Just lovely. And thanks for the reminder that February is a very short month indeed. Hooray!

Hello Deborah,

I'm not much of a photographer but I do love to take pictures, always have. When the winters are long I just remind myself that at least I am not in Minnesota :). Zone 3, wow.

Ha, ha! One of my dreams is to be able to say that! Unfortunately, I'll never get my better half out of here, not even in retirement. He loves the cold and snow in the winter and the lake in the summer (well, I don't mind that last bit). If it were just me I'd be somewhere I can garden most of the year (more than half would be nice) ...but I'm a pretty sweet on my man, so here I am.

Actually, I've noticed what they call "zone creeping" happening here. I think it's because of warming. But just when I think I can do zone 4 plants without fear (and I can do many) or stretch out the season for this variety or that, here comes a big fat -40 (before windchill) to remind me of my place.
